Portland's a halfway decent town. I really misjudged it from the freeways, had to get to know it a little. It's seems to be big enough to have the advantages of a big city, and small enough that you can spend some time downtown and actually not see anyone taking a piss. Convenient, travel-size. I'm still getting used to the fact that any one point of interest, once discovered, is not terribly far from any of the others. In Denver, there could be easily a 45 minute drive between the Museum district, the airport, the cool fish store, the drive-in.

The bookstore was adequately overwhelming. I found some good stuff, but I was hoping for more of a used-book focus. Like many 'serious' bookstores, their romance section was rather obligatory so I wasn't able to fill any gaps in my collection there, but everything else was pretty darn comprehensive. I don't think I've ever been in a bookstore nearly that big. I would say the HSU library was roughly comparable in size, and that's just their main store. There are 4 or 5 others and a couple of warehouses. They have only one shop cat, I would imagine you could patronize the place for 20 years and never lay eyes on it, but there was easily habitat for 4 or 5.
