Bawdy Jokes of the Elementary School Set
Dec. 12th, 2007 01:22 pmDoes anyone remember this one?
Milk, Milk, Lemonade
'Round the corner fudge is made
Stick your finger in the hole
and out pops a tootsie roll!
This delightful prose is accompanied by hand gestures that vaguely resemble the macarena. Milk is the non-existant boobies, lemonade indicated by the crotch and 'round the corner... anal fun factory!
What called this long and happily forgotten bit of kiddie-culture to mind is a stage show I went to with my kids this week. One of the acts was a robot dog whose final joke was to spin around and display his vigorously swinging set of pinballs. The audience, almost completely made up of school-age children went nuts (pun truly not intended).
The organizer for the homeschooling families posted an apology to anyone who was offended, saying she had no idea there would be inappropriate material. Which got me thinking about inappropriate material. Was it inappropriate for children? Frankly, kids are much more bawdy than that amongst themselves. The anatomy lesson above is nothing compared to the sexual folk tales I heard after 'lights out' at summer camp. So, what is actually inappropriate is not that children heard it, but that the joke was in 'mixed company'.
Given the audience response, the kids were delightfully shocked to be invited to enjoy a naughty joke in the presence of grown-ups.
