I visit Endor
Jun. 3rd, 2009 06:49 pmI waffled about the Sierra Club hike in the local weekly. What about all the things I should be doing? Go, A tells me, have fun. Well, there were two people at the carpool meeting place, neither of whom were from the Sierra Club. Upon discovering this, the older woman muttered some excuse (already hiked at the office?) tossed her hiking stick back into her car and departed. The guy was still game. I supplied the car he supplied the non-stop conversation as we drove to the trail head. "Did you know that even though the stars look really small up in the sky they are actually huge and would totally destroy the Earth if they ever fell on it? I really enjoy astronomy. I love to visit planetariums. Do you think San Francisco has a planetarium?" I allowed as I thought that it did. To his credit, he always stopped immediately whenever I attempted to speak and listened politely.
At the trail head there was another guy, also not from the Sierra Club. After waiting fruitlessly, the guys agreed that they wished to complete the hike anyway. This sounds like the beginning of the sort of story that ends with rescue helicopters and mounted searches. "Not knowing the hike had been canceled due to a conflict with the bi-annual black bear rampage and flash flood derby, the inexperienced hikers decided to proceed on their own." I took charge, purchasing a trail map and suggesting a route, and we managed to complete the hike ourselves without injury or being attacked by mountain lions. I saw gorgeous scenery, was menaced by very large trees, and got some great exercise. I forgot my camera, but that's OK lots of other folks did not. I saw cool snails much cooler than the ones in my garden, and the rhodys were blooming.
