Beach Babes

The New Year's sugar extravaganza went well. We all stayed up past 1 am. The pizza was judged by all to be a step too far and we skipped it, but all the other comestibles were well received. A dusted off our projector and got it going with my computer and we all watched movies on the big screen after the kids had played their fav computer games on it for a few hours. The rest of the evening is a bit of a blur, but I think A and I stayed up 'til 3.

I went to the beach yesterday. I know it's January, but the kids wanted to go. What, am I going to tell them to watch TV? So we went and it was good. These days the kids bring a big livestock feed bucket full of garden trowels and assorted wide-mouthed plastic containers to use as molds and then they build sand cities (named after themselves). Ah, my little robber barons. And then people suddenly began having babies so I didn't sleep a great deal last night. I settled down for a nap today. I couldn't talk myself into doing anything else though I tried. A was working on the remodel, but in my state the sound of the table saw was merely soothing white noise. 5yo checked in on me from time to time, leaving a mandarin orange on my pillow each time in case I woke hungry. I had very strange dreams and vague memories of 5yo's voice offering me fruit. The mandarins were actually nice to have when I woke up around dinner time. I buy almost all organic produce; it's like a quirk, and last year there were no organic mandarins to speak of though I looked and waited. This year I think we're on our third box so far this season, most all consumed by myself and 5yo. We sit together and peel and munch.

I'm thinking about keeping track of the books I read this year. This is almost completely from vanity, because I know I read quite a few, and there's another sort of vanity involved too because I would include the cheesy Harlequin keepers that would no doubt be mixed in (even better if I included all the fanfic), but at least some small part is because I love books. This year I finished The Return of the King, read Being Caribou: Five Months on Foot With an Arctic Herd which I was excited to see in my mail as it was at least a year and a half on my PaperbackSwap wish list. It did not disappoint though it was a quick read. Now I need to pass it on to someone else who has probably waited nearly as long. Today I started Mansfield Park. And now I'm feeling compelled to return to it after making myself a chip party. I started calling the dish a 'chip party' because the kids will eat most anything with the word 'party' in it. It's a staple meal for me these days. I scoop some refried beans onto a plate (mild with green chilis), put a layer of black beans on top of that, and a layer of salsa on top of that. Around this mini lasagna I arrange some sturdy corn chips and grate some cheddar cheese onto the chips. Then it all goes into the microwave for 4 minutes. Plenty of time to make some guacamole. Did you know that guac can be made simply by mashing some ripe avocado? It's crazy! Hope you all are having a fine new year so far.
