I was getting all excited about a big tax return, but tonight A asked me to take a peek at one of his teeth. Sure enough, the porcelain crown has a nice chunk broken off of it. I had better get him in to the dentist before I spend it on anything more fun. I won't stereotype, but he doesn't seem very apt to make his own doctor or dentist appointments, and I've let him have his way for five or six years now. This means that he goes not at all while the boys and I go every six months. Time to take it in hand. At least he's good with the hygiene part, and in fairness I think he did alright until his dentist retired.

I've been hearing a lot about how political discourse has gotten so vile and uncivilized. Now, I'm a big fan of civil discourse. I devote no small portion of my free time to the League of Women Voters, a lead purveyor of civil and balanced political dialog. But, I find myself wondering if it was ever REALLY better, and if so, when. Apparently, not in year 1800...

OMG! I love you so much for posting that!!

Also, I'm with A on the dentist. And I cracked a filling, er, well before thanksgiving. Probably should call and make an appointment...

I guess I am a 'glass half full' person. There are still a lot of places in the world where different regimes settle their disputes with violence. I don't mind name calling nearly so much, especially when the different factions obediently relinquish the reins of power at the will of the electorate. It's my understanding that the election of 1800 was our democracy's first big test, the first time one party had ousted another at the ballot box, and the transfer of power went peacefully in spite of the heated rhetoric. While I expect nothing less, it's good to take a moment and appreciate how spiffy and civilized that is.

I just stopped what I was doing and called the dentist. :)
