Door Deal

I found a deal! One of the rotted bits on the garage is a door. I found a used one for $8 at the local recycling center. I like that much better than $95 for a bottom-of-the-line door at the hardware store. It wouldn't fit in my car though. I might try to get my tenant to go pick it up. They got behind on their garbage bill, and unbeknownst to them, the garbage company approached me for me for payment due to city law which requires all residents to have garbage service, with the property owner (me) being ultimately responsible. I put off dealing with it for a month, but when it still hadn't been paid I mentioned it to the husband. We agreed that I would pay it, and they would square it with me when they could, but the wife... The mister and I were there painting when she got home from work and she apologized in tears, very upset. I didn't know what to do. I gave her a big hug and told her everything would be OK. Anyway, he has offered to help us previously, and perhaps taking him up on it would help.

I got a lot done in the garden lately. This year I have 100% more asters than last year, and I'm really enjoying all the pollinator action. It's cute watching them demolition derby one another over the flowers. The bumblebees just go their own way, but some of the smaller bees will target rivals, and the skipper butterflies will too. You can see a hovering leaf-cutter bee carefully line up with a peaceably feeding rival, pause for a few seconds and then ram them at full speed. Bzzzt! I'm pretty happy with it, though I've officially declared that 2/3 of the perennial bed is 'garden fail'. Between the chicken poo disaster and the poppy towers of doom, it's ended the season looking bare and ravaged. I cleaned it up and shifted some things around and hopefully things will go a little more smoothly next season.
