Love is not supposed to be correlated to state of health, appearance, or net worth of a person, all things which are as ephemeral as they are randomly bestowed. The hormonal rush of attraction can be very strong, but it is not considered Grade A Lovin' due to its fickle nature and long-standing, shady connections with the aforementioned status bits. This true love, strong and deep and steady, is supposed to be based on an honest appreciation of who a person is, weaknesses and strengths, lest it be punctured by disillusion or withered by bitterness.
What tickles me is that mother-love, which satisfies more of our ideals more often than any other kind of love, is based entirely on hormones. We don't stay up all night with our babes, change thousands of diapers, bathe them and comfort them, endure toddler tantrums and teenage melodrama (as only a very few people would do for their spouses) because we admire their work with the street children of Borneo. We are compelled, driven even.
Does this make it a lesser love? Naw. As gratifying as it is to go out in the great world and become third party certified, *kachung* Worthy Of Love, as nice as it is to be loved just for 'being you', I think it is equally important to know that somewhere, sometime, we are deeply loved just for being.
