Jun. 17th, 2002 06:51 pmIt's really kind of sad and interesting the huge gulf between university administrators and their goals, and those of the students whom they directly and significantly serve with their money-grubbing. Commencement ceremonies are one of the few areas where the two groups necessarily interact en masse and are forced to confront one another. I think many students select their university based on the financial aid package offered, and on the goodies and programs available, without much thought to ultimate source of the largesse. Technically, I suppose it would probably be best to make their preferences known at that point, rather than as they are on their way out the door with their diplomas in hand. It could be construed that they have already voted for this sort of pandering with their presence and their pocketbooks.
