Speaking of skeptics, Alan and I just got in an argument about Bad Astronomy. There is a particular site by that name that discusses inconsistencies with astronomical reality in popular entertainment, and also addresses serious concerns with the rational basi (:P) of astrology, UFO's, Apollo Moon Hoax, etc. Being a Star Wars fan, Alan feels that they should just shut up about popular entertainment as it's not meant to be rigorous with regards to reality. I disagree, I think (I think therefore I disagree?). It's true that debunkers don't have any more right to be an ass about things than the rest of us. They shouldn't go around insulting purveyors of fantasy for not being more realistic. Nevertheless, I think that these folks are correct in their observation that many people, especially kids, soaking this stuff up don't have the wherewithal to know where the line between fantasy and reality is actually located. It's not Lucasfilm's responsibility to fill this gap in people's education, but I have to support the efforts of folks in the know to attempt to alleviate ignorance wherever they observe it. It may be harmless if Lucas is able to give people false notions about the behavior of objects in space or the nature of planetary rings, but other storytellers may be less benign. As to my doubts, I dunno, I guess it's not really related and has to do with the fact that there are people that 'want to believe' and it is simply rude to attack someone who is minding their own business.
