The Red Hourglass was an excellent way to spoil my digestion, I should have swapped it for my new 'Ooo, look at the pretty' herb gardening book, but I couldn't put it down.
:P I hate midwife appts. The day didn't start well. Alan had been cranky for a couple of days because he had a major headache. Usually, I catch his crankiness just when he's getting better. That morning I said, I'm going by myself, I need a break. I ran over the garbage can, had to get gas and cash. It was one of those days where you look down and see that you skinned your knuckles hours ago but have no idea when or how. Your baby is kind of big, maybe you should get screened for gestational diabetes. Did you do a diet diary? We asked for one last time. Your heartrate is a little fast... are you adequately hydrated? ARggghhh! Next time they're probably going to tell me that the baby is over nourished and that I'm not eating enough. The gestational diabetes test, by the way, involves fasting and then drinking hummingbird fuel. Then they see how out of wack this makes your blood sugar. Wheee! Sounds like something that would make me feel really ill. Just what every pregnant woman needs. Studies have shown that women that take this test don't have fewer big babies than women that do, so apparently the test either doesn't catch the women that have a problem or they can't fix it if they do find it. The midwife said that if the test was positive they would tell me to space my carbos evenly throughout the day and get some form of exercise daily. I suggested that this seemed like excellent advice for anyone, and told her I would feel more comfortable just following it without bothering with the test. I'm guessing that gestational diabetes has more to do with first world lifestyles than being an actual disorder. I do seem to have big babies, this one is following right along with my previous pattern, but Connor was the right weight for his height so it's not like he was just too fat like the babies of women with 'gestational diabetes' are, neither did he seem to have any health problems after he was born... *shrug* or maybe I'm just a bad mom. I can't wait to pop this baby out so I can be a bad mom in privacy.
But things are looking up. Alan passed his driving test! He's on the short-short list for a part-time tech support job. He would be one of 2 employees in the office, but the company plans to move the rest of their operation to the area soon. Apparently, they're having trouble with employee turnover in SoCal and they feel like there's enough tech people up here to fill their needs. Alan says he didn't come out and say that people up here were desperate, but... So far Alan's had nothing but bitchy things to say about every job opportunity that has come his way. This job's in ASP which sucks, he prefers ColdFusion, that one's tech support which he hates, this other one is network maintenance which is boring and not really his forte. This is hard for me, as I'm so excited that we might actually be self-supporting here soon. We had words about it last night which was no good. :P I felt really bad. My mom had no patience for whining when I was growing up, so I don't have a lot of sympathy for it, 'cause I didn't get any.
This just in, Alan's got a third interview in Arcata at 1:30 for the tech support job, his first solo trip. My baby's driving by himself!
