Jul. 1st, 2006 10:50 amI have a confession to make.  I rewrote someone's fic once.  Took the dirtybad offspring of their imagination and did all sorts of precious things to it.  I was rather pleased with the result, and sorry I could never share it with anyone.
Technically, there's no reason why I shouldn't so long as I credited the original author.  Isn't it just fan fiction of fan fiction?  But with great availability comes great responsibility I guess.  Online fan fiction is not just a relationship between a reader and an inert chunk of cellulose; it is a community.  Asking first would only be polite.  I wonder how many fan fiction writers would say 'yes' to such a request the way Joss did?

Date: 2006-09-05 11:52 am (UTC)Being nosy I was scanning down and found this entry. Thought you might be interested to know that someone recently contacted me about doing a fic inspired by mine. I said yes to her after asking to see first chappies. I also sought permission for an as yet unposted fic which was inspired, in part, by another writer's work. So you never know, you could post your nifty rewrite with a clear conscience for the price of a coupla emails.

Date: 2006-09-05 07:48 pm (UTC)I did that before I had tried my hand at any original work. I think it was a great stepping stone and don't regret it a bit. As far as getting permission to post it, I don't know... I like work I added, but am shy about the way I changed it. The original work was fairly dark and angsty and I made it rather more vanilla and fluffy. I probably shouldn't be, but I'm a little shy about that. Somehow it's more revealing, or perhaps more critical-seeming than writing it that way in the first place. Your comment has made me think though. :) Thanks for taking the time.
