I tried to watch Heroes the other night, Episode 1, season 1.

Strike 1: Pritty professor guy talks about how we use only 10% of our brain. Yis, and don't forget that masturbating will make you go blind and you should always forward virus warnings to everyone you know

Strike 2: First female character is a sex worker

Strike 3: Second female character is a cheerleader

If the professor is actually supposed to know not of which he speaks, then my respect for the show will be raised a smidge, but I probably still won't watch. Frankly, too guy porn for my tastes.

OMG I hate that "10% of your brain" thing; anyone with the slightest whiff of actual education should know that. Jesus. Thanks for letting me know that I can easily skip this show! :P

I hesitate to make these sorts of uh... sweeping generalizations, heh. But I do like my tv characters to spout scientific b.s. of a bit higher caliber than that.

*sigh* You're probably right wrt: sweeping generalizations. I continue to be a bitterly dissapointed optimist. :P

That bugged me too! However I started watching several episodes into the season, and actually just saw the first episode the other day-- they had a marathon on the SciFi channel. I was already hooked, and thus I'll keep watching. And I'll forgive a lot for Hiro and Matt the cop!

Maybe I will give it another try sometime. :) My tv/movie time is so limited right now that I'm pretty harsh about what makes the cut.

While I agree with your strikes, and for the first several eps I was complaining about that sort of thing to my sister (we both watch it) ... the show just gets better and better. I can forgive the sex worker/cheerleader/fluffynewagefauxscience/clichés because it's a damn good fascinating story with increasingly-more-complex and enjoyable characters.

I keep thinking it's going to go flat, but instead it just improves by the week. I'm continually impressed by it! (And having said that, I'm crossing my fingers.)

And Buffy was a cheerleader too. Just sayin'.

Definitely try it out. I'm predisposed to not like it as well. But by the latest episode, I'm gnawing my fingernails off waiting for the next ep.

I hated the first ep of Buffy when I saw it premier as well. I was a vampire purist who was disgusted by the "vamp face" and the dusting. I intentionally avoided it ever after… until I flipped through channels and inadvertently landed on "Halloween" in re-runs one night. Since then, I've regretted missing out on watching from the beginning and feeling that unspoiled excitement.

I've never been a huge TV watcher. Really, until "Heroes" I hadn't had anything I cared much about since the death of the Buffy-verse. It's kind of fun to have a show I care enough about to be debating checking out the spoiler sites!

I have to say I'm not especially enamored of Nikki (the stripper); though her story gets much more interesting. And I love her estranged husband and her son. Claire (cheerleader) though I like a lot. Very believable and well written arc for her; give her a chance! She'll grow on you!

I wouldn't mind the guy porn if there was a self-deprecating sense of humour with it, only I haven't seen one. I'm holding out for anything that acknowledges the macho for what it is, but stopped watching myself and am waiting for it to be reported :)

I don't have any problem with the female characters of themselves. I don't think there is anything wrong with being a sex worker or a cheerleader. But I think they were given these rather unrepresentative professions purely for guy porn purposes. What's the matter with that? That's a question for another post, but it seemed like a big sign as to what the role of women was going to be on the show.

My husband kept watching. He says he was hooked in by the end of the first episode. I'll put it on my 'maybe' list. :)

As a vampire enthusiast, purist even, did the dusting and vamp face arise with The Lost Boys? I'm thinking somebody on the Buffy staff watched that flick. It even has the bleach blond vamp w/ flappy coat I had the poster on my wall for the longest time IIRC

Yup, I'm with you I think. My husband kept watching. If he starts begging me to watch one of these days maybe I'll give it another try. *secretly hopes I will always have something better to do*
