Fish Tank

Aquarium keeping is almost as cool as philately or coin collecting. ALMOST. Unlike those other hobbies, you just throw money at your aquarium and have nothing of any particular resale value to show for it. Just pure sex appeal, that's all. I told myself I'd take some pics next time I trimmed the plants. This tank is actually not particularly expensive. The plants are grown using dirt and sunlight, as opposed to high-intensity lights, expensive imported mineral rich clay/gravel, substrate heating and CO2 supplementation. The tank really does have some fairy good-sized, colorful fish, but they are shy.

That's fantastic! I tried to do fish when my son was little, but they kept dying. I moved onto aquatic frogs 8 years ago and had more success. One died this past spring, but the other is still kicking. The tank is not as nice as yours, though.

Oooh... what a nifty tank. Yeah, fish don't usually photograph real well. ;) We have several at my place, all of them now in the capable hands of [livejournal.com profile] panzerwalt, who is much more fanatic about keeping them stocked, clean, and healthy than I ever was.

I like this style of fish-keeping more than the change the water a lot version I used to do. Basically, you put a fair bit of fish food, plants and light in the mix. The plants grow and clean the water in the process. I only do maintenance every couple of months and the fish don't croak all the time.

On the downside. If you don't have the right balance, the algae grows instead of the multi-cellular plants. The fish don't care, but you can't see them not caring, and your mother gently suggests that you probably would be happier without that mucky eyesore in the living room. Such is life.

Thank you! The tank was not so nice when my kids were littl(er). I've just recently turned it around from neglected algae farm. Now it's a neglected plant farm which is more attractive.
