OK, hopefully this will be the last you hear of my new obsession. *sigh* Their love is so epic. So what if his idea of courtship is to abduct her and threaten to enslave her entire planet unless she agrees to marry him? I'm sure marriage would mellow him considerably.

I am so stuck in the eighties. I love this vid so hard, the music, everything.

Well, here's the thing. It's... Voltron really kinda sucks. They took the fairly adult anime GoLion and used the animation as raw fodder for a children's cartoon American style. Which is to say they ditched all the gore, character death and Oedipus issues.

They didn't dub it, they completely rewrote it, and they often really had to stretch to make their new story sorta match their recycled animation. For example, Lotor's nightmare in The Sleeping Princess it clearly involves two different women although the dialog indicates they are all Allura, and ogre guards is totally wtf. The first woman is actually his mother who was murdered by his father. If you know what's actually going on it's more interesting. I think that's why Lotor feels fairly menacing and complex even though the American version white-washes him considerably.

:D Then you know whereof I speak.

Episodes 1-52 are the GoLion ones and most seem to be available on YouTube. Because the series was so popular, the Powers That Be actually did another season that was written and animated for American audiences. I can't recommend those really, tho the one-liners aren't too bad. The second season even has the little moral at the end, omg. I guess there was some regulation that children's programming had to be educational so they kept doing the same silly cartoons, but at the end some character summed up what we were supposed to have 'learned' from the episode, like: He-Man learned today that Good always triumphs over Evil when it has a magical sword and good friends.
