The Earth Moves Under Your Feet!

botiasYes, we're all fine here, all 50,000 odd of us. When I looked at the earthquake map just now, I was struck by the big red square, which is how I missed the giant teal square at first. The big red square(s) were just the aftershocks. 6.5 on the Richter scale. Caused all my bookshelves to vomit their contents. I feel lame. A lot of things got smashed and dinged, and I can't help but feel I should have secured things better, shouldn't have been so complacent. Both of my antique clocks stayed put *whew* but one of them shook so hard that the pendulum was pulled free by its weight. At least we tied the shelves to the walls so that they didn't vomit their contents and then fall over on them and possibly onto passers by. I know there are some power outages and gas leaks out there tonight. I hope knick knacks and dinnerware are the only casualties, especially since this is all our fault. I KNEW this would happen if we removed any of the earthquake ties on the foundation.
This is the first major quake since I moved back in '02, and my first major quake since the Northridge quake in '94. I happened to be living in So. Cal. then and so got to experience "the highest ground acceleration ever instrumentally recorded in an urban area in North America". My mom was even more lucky. She happened to be in L.A. on business. A building fell on my car in that quake, but there were people that had worse luck. I foresee a lot of super glue in my future. 4yo and 9yo were at ages where they took it pretty well, but 6yo was a bit of a wreck. He was all hot for the U-haul solution until I pointed out that other places have floods, snow storms and tornadoes. After that he decided earthquakes were not so bad. I hope he remembers that because they are giving us a 75% chance of an aftershock greater than 5.0.
