Tree stuff

It was a clear day today. I didn't plant any trees, but I bought another one: an Esopus Spitzenburg apple (Thomas Jefferson's favorite!), a huckleberry (Mark Twain's favorite!), and also a grape vine, some sort of purple tasty grape that doesn't require hot summers. It's past time for a support group of some kind, but I did do some work as well. I pruned all three of the established fruit trees. What a job it was, involving ladders and various pointy implements, none of which inadvertantly or vertantly pierced my flesh. My new fruit trees will not be allowed to get that big *swears*. By hacking them off low to the ground from the start, their canopy will start 18 inches off the ground instead of five feet.

It was kind of last minute dormant pruning for this climate. The pear tree's buds didn't look terribly dormant anymore, and I notice all the ornamental plum trees are in full bloom.

While I was looking up different training methods for trees, I found these nifty trees.

How cool are these? OK maybe cool isn't quite the word, but I want one or five. :) It's so exuberant.

I'd love to have a bunch of those in the front yard!

Isn't that neat? I love it. :) Especially the hair.

Every yard needs some tree sculpture. *nods*

an Esopus Spitzenburg apple (Thomas Jefferson's favorite!),

How about a Seek No Further, that was a huge favorite in Colonial times.

I have an Esopus Spitzenburg apple in my box of apples in the basement (it's a box of antique varieties from Applesource).

Better not to encourage me! I looked up Applesource. That looks like a neat service. I also felt inspired to look for places that sell branches of different varieties for grafting. Could be fun...

The Esopus sounds fabulous. He loved the Newton Pippin too, which is from my neck of the woods *is proud*.

Those trees are so joyful! People are amazing, aren't they -- that they can think of things like that.

I need some garden chores to do now, but it's very cold and dreary out.

:) Aren't the 'pooktres' neat? Joyful is just what they are. I highly approve of that use of human ingenuity.

You could pick something that requires digging. You wouldn't be cold for long.
