The title sez it all...


My garden in winter. Not very inspiring. It's hard to believe how lush it gets in summer. The trees are marked. Only the pear is cut back for small size. The pluot has three grafts which I cannot cut below, the 'Anna' apple is no longer dormant and I'm hoping to do more of an espalier sort of thing than a bush. The Red Fuji apple, I'm hoping to train in a tall, skinny, Christmas tree-ish shape.



This pic is moving off to the right from the previous one. I want to do a matching tall, skinny tree with the Spitzenburg apple. I'm hoping to train the blackberries against the fence.



Daffodils coming up!



I took this last summer. This is the same spot as the above picture. What a difference. The foreground plant is chocolate cosmos. The flowers actually do have a chocolatey smell.



Flower buds on the 'Anna' apple. It's a very early variety.



More flower buds and my creepy shadow.



Crocus are blooming... until the slugs eat them.

Buds! "sighs"

I planted regular Cosmos last Summer and I had tons of finches, especially Goldfinches, climbing on them and eating the seedheads.

Sounds like a great reason to plant some Cosmos. I would love to attract some goldfinches to my garden.

Wah! I'm jealous of all of your signs of spring while I'm waiting on heaps of snow to come tonight.

Your fruit trees are nice. Do you have to worry about deer munching on them where you are, or is your yard fenced in?

Not only have I signs of spring, but no deer either. I'm in the middle of town. No roosters for me, though I know where there is one only a few blocks away. There is some varmint that eats my corn. And not the cobs. When the plants get about 6 inches high, something comes along and knaws them off right above the ground. Must be raccoons or opossums (or skunks eep!).

Hmm, it might also be a groundhog if you have them where you are... not sure what their range is, but they're horrible for gnawing tender shoots out of gardens. When I lived in NY I was in a tiny yard in a suburb and I still had one that came into my yard. It drove my dog nuts.

You could probably catch whatever it is with a have a heart trap, but if it does turn out to be a skunk then you probably won't want to deal with releasing it or putting it in your car to take it elsewhere.

Those are chocolate cosmos. I'm afraid they are actually a more of a chocolate color, but they are backlit in the pic.

Hope I can give you a little spring vicariously. Glad you liked the pics. I can't wait for them to have leaves and do things. Right now they are just sticks stuck in the dirt.
