I've heard that people get dogs if they want loving companionship and cats if they have a more masochistic bent and wish to be servile and occasionally lacerated. Me, I do prefer cats, but I regret to report that it is because I like to abuse them. I confess to laying socks across their backs if they get too close while I'm folding clothes and to petting their paws even though I know that's not their favorite. The verbal abuse is constant and varied. Jones can't spend the day napping in a sunbeam on the foot of my bed without being informed that she is lazy and useless. I mock her when she runs around the house, chased by imaginary devils. I snicker when her grace and coordination fail her. I regularly inform her that her mottled beige and gray coat renders her the world's most boring kitty. As long as I scratch the back of her neck until she drools and feed her faithfully, she cares not a jot. How pathetic is that? What a sell out.

Hah! She is too self-interested, and contents herself with biting my toes when they move enticingly under the covers, and tripping me occasionally.

Even though your taunt and malign her, you also feed and shelter the little layabout. Sounds like your relationship works perfectly.

I often point out to her that she has a brain the size of a walnut, yet I think we have a certain understanding. ;)

Oh the HORRORS!

I hope you've put a nest egg away for kitty therapy, missy.

*snickers*

Plus I make her wear a BLING COLLAR. Gold lame and rhinestones, baby. It's therapy gold.

Lol, you haven't had a Siamese before. They will drive you nuts with their needing to be with you all the time.

I had a 'doggy kitty' once. You can believe I informed him of that regularly as well.

I dunno, I think dogs require way more upkeep. You have to train them, take them on walks or change the indoor wee-wee pads more often than an entire litter box. They are more affectionate, especially the lap dogs, where the long-haired ones need their mouths wiped when they eat and their butts wiped after a No. 2. They are more companions in the "I know I can't live without you" sense and they show their love and gratitude way more than a cat. However, I know plenty of dogs that are snappers and biters even when playing, and many have utterly destroyed objects or articles of clothing.

I agree, you can mess with a cat more than a dog. The cat doesn't hold much of a grudge because they've come to the conclusion that it's not worth their time and energy to stay angry at us for long :D There's a reason there isn't a Cat Whisperer show!

I think you are right about the upkeep. Cats are a relatively low maintenance which I like. And I agree that you can mess with them more. That's what my post is all about. ;)
