I was working out in the garden when I heard the cat. At first I tried to ignore it. I don't need another cat, much less one that might require rescuing or expensive repairs. But the mews continued, their very volume indicating some sort of distress, and sometimes they rose to an unmistakable pitch of discomfort or alarm. I had to investigate. The sounds led me to a nearby alley. They were coming from someone's yard, behind a six-foot privacy fence -- a privacy fence with a knot hole. I peered through it, and I was in luck: the source of the noise was immediately framed in my limited view. On a deck was a large iron cage. And in the cage was a large, green parrot. If you can imagine hungry cat 'cat that feels that it ought to be fed' spoken with a parrot accent, it perfectly describes the sounds I had been hearing.

Right now it's raining and actually raining, not just misting or drizzling. This is a sure sign that I've been telling people the predicted rain would not amount to anything. I have, and normally it doesn't. Complete drought is 'condition normal' from June to September. Normal, but personally distressing as my Miserly Nature quarrels bitterly with my desire for a thriving garden. For a few days anyway, there is a cease fire.

And that's about the most exciting thing going on with me at the moment. My business entertained thirteen reservations for the month of June, a record, yet the ladies had their babies one after another in an orderly fashion and all during waking hours instead of going all at once at 3 a.m. I've located a new favorite beach. It's on the western shore of the bay so it's sheltered from the wind, and the shallow water and no surf make it perfect for the kids.

Movies: I finally saw Kung Fu Panda recently, and it was actually good! The sequel was easily as good or better. Only the kiddos could get me to see another Transformers movie, and I almost certainly will be doing so soon. Super 8 never really had a plot plus the 'magnet' that attracts non-ferrous metals was a distraction for me; the zombie movie that plays during the credits is the best part. Looking forward to Harry Potter/Cowboys vs. Aliens.

Bedtime reading: We recently finished the six-book epic that is the first Warriors series. There was a dilemma. Ten books chock full of kitty soap opera still remained on the shelf: 3000 pages of secret adoptions, star-crossed lovers, prophesies, disasters, death, betrayal, prophesies of disasters, death and betrayal... We were enjoying it, but I was ready to read something with more depth. Solution: we alternate epic quests. Every other night I read The Thief, an excellent Newberry winner recommended by one of my fine flisties. Thank you!

P.S. True Blood is cracktastic!

I think it's wild that Parrot did just the right impression to get you to investigate!

I'm just glad I don't live with the parrot and have to hear its cat impression all the time. Sounds like it also does an excellent car alarm 'chirp'.

They are fascinating. I've considered one as a pet on and off.

I recently read The Feast Nearby and the author has a grey parrot who she says has the mind of a five or six year old child so that she can have actual conversations with the bird.

Parrots live longer than people and are needier than children, but they're so beautiful and interesting it almost looks worth it sometimes.

Almost. :) I once bought a pet grave marker for a person, and when they questioned the age, I told them it was for a parrot.
