I really enjoyed this short BtVS fic: Five in One by selenak, partly because I found it validating. I found it validating because I go through this mental process as a fangirl: I ♥ Spike --> Oh noes! Spike is a very horrific monster! --> As long as I don't lose sight of what he is, then it's all OK!

Other folks deal with this another way: I ♥ Spike --> Oh noes! Spike is a very horrific monster! --> La-La-La Not listening! And honestly, that's an equally valid way of dealing with this little problem. For these folks, the above-recommended fic may not be useful, though it does, of course, retain all of its other merits.

Why my mental process is a little silly: Spike is a fictional construct. Spike's Real Life stats:

People killed: 0
People maimed: 0
Orgasms inspired: 552,725*

*Yeah, it was kinda fun coming up with this number. And if everyone had just stopped wanking/fantasizing/sexing when this number was reached, it would even be accurate.

There's nothing wrong - or nothing new - with liking fictional monsters.

One thing I'll never understand is why this only ever comes up in relation to female fans liking "bad" male fictional characters. When a straight male fan loves a villain because he's "so cool!" or even a villainess because she's so hot, that's perfectly OK - but when a female fan is into a sexy evil male character? OH NOES THE HORROR! THOSE BAD BOYS ARE TAKING OUR WOMENZ! LOCK TEH WOMENZ, THEY CAN'T TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES!

The thing that does bother me is, however, when people who like fictional evil characters try to prove that those characters aren't really evil because killing people etc. isn't really such a bad thing, compared to, say, other characters being unpleasant to our beloved character (oh the horror!) and how these characters are bitchy/foolish/bigoted for having a problem with our beloved character's mass-murdering past, or jerkass tendencies that we find so funny/endearing since we're not their targets.

I agree, and Spike isn't the first fictional monster to take my fancy. There are so many out there that even with a strict preference for white hair, I've been doing just fine. He's the first one that really caused me some angst though. I've pretty much moved on to acceptance by this point. Bullies are as old as social animals, and it's an effective evolutionary strategy; I think some part of us recognizes that.

Ha! I once asked James Marsters at a convention if his insistence on warning female fans about 'bad boys' was patriarchal and sexist as he never warns anyone about being finding Faith attractive. Maybe he leaves that to Eliza Dushku. I have seen guys taking flak for fanboying characters like Hannibal Lecter, though, it's out there.

When people are doing things like that I guess it's just time to hit the back button and hope that they have a completely different perspective on real life situations.

Me too! You know, I would double dog dare Joss Whedon to kill Spike. He's as essential as the head line characters now.

Well. Kill for good. You know what I mean?

This! Both of you win with the comments. Especially the bit about people's reactions to female fans liking the evil/bad/villain/monster characters. *feels way too persecuted because of my liking Lezard*

Oddly enough I don't feel persecuted for liking Lotor. But I think the Lotor fans are a lot more vocal than the Lezard fans....I miss the good old days of the LezaLenne comm when I was getting comments on each of my postings, and that fed into my creativity and thus caused me to write even more...now a days most who seem to like him, just silently fave and follow my stories....^^''

ANd I really enjoyed your tally for Spike's real life crimes. Not that giving fan girls orgasms from reading and imagining him is a crime! XD ha ha ha! *gets shot*
