I think some of the smell of pet shelters is the numerous bowls of carnivore kibble scattered about. I thought perhaps it was clinging to me, and then I realized it was probably the sack of food on the front seat. Meet 'Bennie' the Abysinnian tabby. I fell in love with a shy kitty with a loud, rumbly purr, and 9YO wanted pretty much any cat he could take home TODAY, but we already have a kitty that prefers grown-ups so we decided to wait for half-grown Bennie who is said to be very forward and make much more use of the 'Be my friend forever' and 'Let's play' in his kitty vocabulary than Jones does. He'll be available on Tuesday after a 'trip to the vet'.

I got to hold a newborn baby between my hands, just for a minute. Sometimes I desperately want a baby to hold. My arms seem to ache with emptiness. It's wild. I wonder if this isn't some sort of grandmotherly urge kicking in. In most of human history, I would be solidly a grandmother at my age. But it might also be because my 'baby' is six, again, time for a new pregnancy, biologically. I find myself interested in acquiring more pets. Cats, chickens, maybe even a dog.

I took the boys out for nachos and milkshakes. The gentleman farther down the counter paid for our snack on his way out, without ever saying hello. I thought this was pretty neat so I paid for the guy on the other side's lunch.

It sounds like it was a good birthday with cat visits and milkshakes. Nice paying it sideways!

When I told my mom I got 9YO a cat she was incredulous. "A live, breathing one?" Then she told me I was an awesome mom. ?? Maybe she forgot that I like pets.

Nice cat, I have a long haired version named Jesse who I got last year. I hope your two will get along better than mine do :) It's cool that are you getting chickens, I would love to a few, but my I am living with my mother and she has had them before and has said no. Have you decided what breeds you are getting ? I know since you are in washington you need birds that are cold hearty, and will probably since you want a small backyard flock be going to TSC or your local feed store. Just be careful not to get the Cornish X birds, because those are the meat birds and are made to be slaughtered at six to eight weeks, not for egg consumution. The sex links are a nice way to start having chickens and you will be sure to get alot of eggs and manure for their first two years. I am on backyardchickens.com under kitmarlowescot2, and that is the best website out their if you have any questions about chickens. I know since I am living in VA I need a breed that is more heat tolerant, I love to get the ugly naked neck chickens, and hopefully one year will. Just do your research and backyarchickens.com is the place to go, they even have ways of showing you how to build a coop on the cheap. Good luck with the chicks, but just remember not to let the kids talk you into a the cute chicks, they don't stay that way for long and I doubt want a lot of roosters. Do your homework and see what works for you.

PS here is a video to show you how to tell the difference between the male and female sex link day old chicks.

Thanks for all the info! I think my mom has red sex links and they are great egg producers. I'm tentatively planning to get an Americauna, a Rhode Island Red and a Buff Orpington, like this guy did: http://3chixaday.blogspot.com/ They're all good egg breeds. I understand the Buff Orpingtons are very mellow and friendly, and the RIRs seem very handsome, almost black. My mom got mixed chicks and ended up with roosters, of course.

The Americauna if he got it from a hatchery or feed store like TSC is more likely an Easter Eggers. A true Americauna are quite rare, and not to be found anywhere other than a few breeders, so if you do get an Americauna you need to get one from a breeder. Otherwise it will be a mutt Easter Egger and you might not get a blue or green egg, just as likely to get a pink, white or brown. Good luck with your choice, and your breeds are a good choice.

As a beginner, it's probably fine if I start with a mutt. :)

Mutts do make the best pets :) and all three breeds you want can be easily found at TSC or any local feed store. Good luck with them, I know around here the TSC gets them on Wednesday and Friday. Just be careful to stick to the pullet bins, and not the straight run bins. Straight run means unsexed.
