Helped Mom out with 'Brew for Books' yesterday. It was actually more fun than I expected. It was a 'tea' put on by the local Soroptomists. There were 9 tables and a member, or pair of members, had to come up with a theme and sell seats to their table. The proceeds go to buy feminist propaganda for local elementary schools. Mom did a Hawaiian theme. She said that for every term but hers the Soroptomist president has gotten to go to Hawaii. She got to go to San Ramone. She figured that the theme table was as close as she was going to get. I got the fronds on the inflatable palm tree to stand upright, which was pretty key. The trick is to have a dextrous tongue. The fronds are so small to begin with that you can't take your mouth off it until the plug is reinserted or they sag. I also kept the guest of honor company. She received a $6000 grant from the club to buy a car so that she could attend night school and finish her degree. We both thought that was pretty darn cool of them. I was so proud of my Mom, running around in a grass skirt and coconuts. She doesn't have any false pride. If wearing coconuts is what it takes, she wears coconuts. It was funny to hear the half-serious bitching from the other members when our table won first place. It was like a bunch of farm wives at the county fair. The club obviously does good things for people, but there's a certain amount of petty one-ups-manship in the process. Whatever her faults may be, my mama is not petty.
