It's a little creepy to realize one has forgotten something completely. Not like an appointment or something unpleasant that's clearly and justly been suppressed, but forgotten days, weeks or entire books. I was reading to the kids, The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley, and I did not realize I that I had read the book before until I recognized a single sentence half-way into the book, and I only recognized one small bit after that. Both bits had to do with sparkly stones. I always did like bling. I am used to the fond idea that I retain a great deal of what I read, but perhaps I only retain what I remember and only remember what I retain. Who knows what I have forgotten. Not me obviously.
It's hard to make up names. The name of her magic sword resulted in many nights of giggles. Gonturan. This sounded to us like Gone tourin'
"She's gone tourin' with Gonturan!" And the villain's name was revealed to be Eggs Dead. Ha ha. Maybe you had to be there.
Now I am reading to them Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods. It's genuinely funny and a huge hit. I left out the most gruesome bit of bear lore, though.
