The property has been deemed a swamp and is too expensive besides. The search goes on.

Yesterday we did the Solar Home Tour. That was fun. I like some aspects of Arcata. It is philosopically closer to us than any other local community, but way too far at one end of the spectrum for a group of folks generally claim to espouse balance and harmony. What I like best about it is part of what is negative about Arcata. I like older houses, unique houses, houses with personality, houses that are cared for. Arcata has a lot of these houses because property values are through the roof. Instead of building a McMansion in a new gated subdivision, folks with dough who would be home owners in Arcata are forced to recycle older homes. I suppose there is a kind of irony in ultra-conventional fifties bungalows being gutted and transformed into eco-cottages.

Oh God I loathe the McMansions out in McKinleyville, almost as much as I despise the acres of track housing that looks like it was rolled out of a damn factory. No, really - I grew up in those kinds of places; in Sunnyvale, a.k.a. Suburban Hell. I liked the horse pastures and funky "mobile home" trailer park ambiance.

*siiiiiiiigh* Good to hear that Arcata still has some of the nice houses up. :]

I went for a walk around the neighborhood last night, and was marveling at the number of turn-of-the-century houses that are still in use, and in good repair. Some of them are freaking huge, and beautiful. I'd love to buy a house up in that area, but it's pretty pricey. Good luck on finding some property...
