The Logic of Spuffy
Feb. 7th, 2007 10:15 amI read my Spuffy pet peeve again the other day.
Dawn: "Not all humans are good, some are ebol like Hitler, so a soul must not matter."
Buffy: "Golly Dawn, I never thought of it that way before."
Dawn: "Buffy, where are you going? We were going to stroke one another's hair tonight."
Buffy: "I gotta go. I'd better snaffle Spike before some other smart girl does!"
Dawn: "Yay!!!11!!kittenyay!"
Mr. Spock would despair for the human race (again) if he read this stuff. The logic is very bad. Let's plug other things into the same argument and see what happens shall we?
"Not all boats float, so a cinder block would probably do the job just as well."
"Some explorers get lost even with a compass, so I guess it's OK that I've set off for the Pole without one."
"Some couples get pregnant even though they used protection. Why bother?"
"Some cars just won't go even though they have wheels. Wheels must not be important. Tomorrow I think I'll drive my storm shelter to work."
ETA: I would have thought up more, but I had to get back to work on my Season 2 crack!fic where ebol unchipped Spike and innocent inexperienced Buffy get it on. Alas, I am not joking. Watch this space, if it pleases.

Date: 2007-02-07 07:44 pm (UTC)No, your Spuffy logic is a little more subtle than that. :)

Date: 2007-02-07 08:54 pm (UTC)S'okay. I teach beginners logic to undergraduates sometimes. They make BtVS shipper wars look uber-intellectual. All cats are aliens, indeed.

Date: 2007-02-09 11:01 pm (UTC)I've seen works executed in varying styles and with varying levels of skill all using this same completely invalid argument to support the notion that the soul/soulless issue is so much meaningless semantics. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't, but this argument that some souled folks are evil anyway has nothing useful to contribute, I'm afraid.
I have to admit I am biased. I get annoyed with the notion that Buffy is just being bigoted when she insists on her boyfriends having more than just a rudimentary conscience at best.
