About your friends…	Bonds with them as soon as they give him half a chance; the homicidal asshat thing is just a protective facade for a sensitive guy that really cares about people.	Fantasizes about you ditching the pathetic hangers-on and letting him show you what power is really for. What you see in them is a complete mystery.
On rape...	Not sporting, that; not his thing. Angelus on the other hand… *shakes head*	It takes all the fun out of it if they're already too weak to cry.
Oh no! Your ex-boyfriend catches you in bed with him!	His only thought is for you. Though chipped, he valiantly threatens your ex with bodily harm at the first hint of criticizing you. *much sexy growling and posturing*	Thinks the scenario is just delicious. He knows your ex is too honorable to stake him (wanker) and he takes full advantage, rubbing it in as deep as he can. Oh, are you still here?
You're deeply depressed and floundering…	Watches your back and delivers pithy vampire advice between exchanging worried looks with your friends. He can't help but hope your growing friendship will lead to something.	Is worried about you, doesn't want you to go offing yourself or anything. But what a priceless opportunity to get over on you at last and maybe even cut you loose from your loser friends.
To prove his love…	Gives up evil doin's of all sorts. Changing yourself to be what they want, even if it goes against your very nature, isn't that what love's about really? And he's always been love's bitch.	Betrays his ex-love and offers to stake her in front of you, but oh no, he'd never hurt YOU… much… just don't go dumping him the way she did.

Very, very, true, but I have to say, I think I like fanwank Spike least of all. Worst of both worlds or something. But there's probably some truth to it nonetheless. I don't actually believe canon!spike is quite as dark as I painted him, though I think he was written that way. Drat James Marsters and his girly-pire performance. ;)

That was hilarious! I laughed out loud. Thanks for writing it. Does anyone know where it's possible to read more Canon Spike??? So much fic starts off enticingly Canon Spike and then rapidlys heads off down the slipperly slope towards Fic!Spike, which still sometimes makes for some great reads, but for me it just pretty much kills his swagger and sexiness. I want pure, unadulterated, unreformed Canon Spike! Where can I get him?

I hope you don't mind late comments? I don't remember how I found this but - YES to every word of this, and thank you. True to canon characterizations is something I look for in fic and even in meta essays, and it's hard to find (I know that in any fandom, the ratio of writers to GOOD writers is always going to be lopsided). I guess the thing about BtVS is that everyone is seeing a different show (ie whatever they want to see) and the show is layered enough to allow that to some degree - but NOT stretched to infinity. Were any of us even watching the same show?

The funny thing is, with the comics (the so-called S8 & S9 - which I mostly am horrified by) there's much the same sort of thing going on, only this time coming from Joss himself - did no one connected to the comics WATCH the show? It's on the level of the worst sort of fanfic (and that's all I'll say about those.)
